Room for Rent!

I need a new roommate... My other roommate does too... for a nice room at a wonderful price. It's a good size (huge by SF standards) with a big walk in closet. In an even bigger flat. 3 1/2 bedrooms - 1 1/2 baths - big kitchen - big living room - working fireplace - DSL (if your into that sort of thing) - Mostly furnished. All in the Western Additionish area (right on the corner of Sutter and Broderick)... Not the most exciting neighborhood around, but super close to all sorts of buses (38,24,22,2, the 4 and thats just a sample).

The room goes for $515 a month + utils (cheap) and a $600 deposit. It's available January 1st.

The other roommate is a former Academy of Art student and current aspiring Video Game Designer. I'm all of this here........ look around. We're both relatively quiet and clean.

We would prefer a lady.... it's nice to balance things out.... who doesn't eat meat or watch television. But we're open to acceptions for the right person. The only real requirements are someone who's pretty chill and responsible.

Spirit House is dedicated to tracing the ecstatic spirit in jazz. Broadcast on Eastside Radio 89.7fm in Sydney, Australia on Mondays between 9.30 and Midnight, the program will cover everything from early avant-garde to freshly minted masterpieces. Presenters are Sean O'Brien and Gerard Hogan. This blog will document the music played on Spirit House, and hopefully provide an insight into why we play what we play through reviews, links and anything else that comes to mind.

I just left my computer idle for awhile.... not sure how long, maybe half an hour..... with the web browser on the google home page. When i came back, the search box was pre-filled with "wild lesbian sluts and pikshurz of my toez". I don't trust those google guys. Not for a second.

I thought it might be fun to walk the length of Sutter Street, taking pictures all the way. It was. When I got to the end I wandered to Stacey's and purchased Emergence -- The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software, by Steven Johnson.

Histories of intellectual development - the origin and spread of new ideas - usually come in two types of packages: either the "great man" theory, where a single genius has a eureka moment in the lab or the library an the world is immediately transformed; or the "paradigm shift" theory, where the occupants of the halls of science awake to find an entirely new floor has been built on top of them, and within a few years, everyone is working out of the new offices. Both theories are inadequate: the great-man story ignores the distributed, communal effort that goes into any important intellectual advance, and the paradigm-shift model has a hard time explaining how the new floor actually gets built. I suspect Mitch Resnick's slime mold simulation may be a better metaphor for the way idea revolutions come about: think of those slime mold cells as investigators in the field; think of those trails as a kind of institutional memory. With only a few minds exploring a given problem, the cells remain disconnected, meandering across the screen as isolated units, each pursuing its own desultory course. With pheromone trails that evaporate quickly, the cells leave no trace of their progress - like an essay published in a journal that sits unread on a library shelf for years. But plug more minds into the system and give their work a longer , more durable trail - by publishing their ideas in best-selling books, or founding research centers to explore those ideas - and before long the system arrives at a phase transition: isolated hunches and private obsessions coalesce into a new way of looking at the world, shared by thousands of individuals.
