Document Incompetent
Those fine folks over at MoveOn recently launched MisLeader.
Every weekday they post a short article explaining in detail the
difference between the Bush administration's spin and the actual facts surrounding a wide variety of issues. Unlike an unsettling majority of information making the rounds
these days, MisLeader backs there's up with footnotes referencing all
the sources used. Often times these will include links to documents on the
web -- Making it very easy to do your own research.

Job Losses at Level of Great Depression Contradict President Bush's Wishful Predictions
Instead of creating 510,000 jobs in 2003, as President Bush predicted, the Republican-led economy has suffered a net loss of 473,000 jobs so far this year.
Bush Administration Knew Iraq Could Not Pay for Reconstruction with Oil Revenues
President Bush has had to reverse course and increase his request for reconstruction aid to Iraq more than eight-fold, from an original $2.5 billion to a current level of $20.5 billion1, largely because he earlier disregarded a well-documented report revealing the poor state of Iraq's oil industry.

DIY Campaign Ads
Steven Johnson has come up with a fasinating idea...
I have a feeling that as the 2004 campaign heats up, the blogosphere will become an increasingly rich source of "message" brainstorming, given how easy it is to put together a relatively polished attack ad these days.I want to make one. ...If only I knew for who.
In that spirit, I've spent about two hours tonight putting together a little imagined TV spot that a Clark campaign could run against Bush (Mob Spots)

The Numbers Are In
Three years of violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has killed 2,477 people on the Palestinian side and 860 on the Israeli side. In addition, about 60 Palestinians suspected of informing for Israel have been killed by Palestinian militants. (SFGate)Everyone is loosing.

Way Off Site
As part of today's Blogger offsite, I made my first visit to the Exploratorium. It wasn't at all what I expected. Instead of a very designed museum type experience, it was more like a warehouse full of really cool, very homemade, gadgets and demonstrations. As someone put it, it was "made by dorks, for dorks". What more can you ask for?
Afterwards we intended to go to the PepperMill in Daly City. Turns out it's closed down now. A note on the door read something like "Thanks for 30 years Daily City". Looking in the windows you could still see the plush purple horseshoe booths and fake blossoming cherry trees. Looking at Jason Goldman, you could see the heartbreak.
They say it always comes in threes. I hope that isn't true. I don't know if I can handle two more favorite restaurants dyeing.

More Bush at the UN...
He described the guerrilla war, still ongoing, as a battle against "terrorists and holdouts of the previous regime"—ignoring a recent finding of the U.S. intelligence community that the main, and most rapidly growing, threat these days comes from ordinary Iraqis, resentful of the occupation.Fred Kaplan in Slate.
In Quotes: UN General Assembly
BBC News has compiled a list of key quotes from the United Nations General Assembly and reaction from analysts. They also have the full transcripts of the speeches given by George Bush and Kofi Annan.

Last month, terrorists brought their war to the United Nations itself. The UN headquarters in Baghdad stood for order and compassion, and for that reason, the terrorists decided it must be destroyed....Because it's entirely un-true. The bombing wasn't perpetrated in the name of chaos and suffering. It was carried out as an act against a perceived oppressor. It can be argued whether or not that is true, but it won't be. By framing these actions under generic emotional hooks any real discussion of these issues is pushed aside. Regardless of where you stand on the war in Iraq, the current situation is in need of a solution. Good ones don't come from avoiding the hard questions...

I don't think I know how to brush my teeth correctly. At least three days a week I end up with toothpaste somewhere on my person. Sometimes I don't notice right away. ....In which case it will spread and spread until it's on my hand and my shirt and my pants untill I have no choice but to pay it some attention.

Function In Need of Form
I like looking at this stark white web page. Even though there's not much to see, there is a lot to pretend is here. It's like a brand new coloring book, just itching for a little crayon action.

Messy Web Site
This site is (was) nice and all.... but I've been looking at it for way too many years. It needs a facelift. I've been futzing around in photoshop.... and haven't come up with much. Instead, I'm going to try designing it right here. Live and in person. As of this very moment, the "design" consists of nothing but some simple markup. Style will be applied shortly. Watch your head.
Update: i've got a few of the things i want to have in... and the text is nice and readable. Next comes colors and other such designy things.

Scientists Meditate on Happiness
"In summarizing the two-day discussions, Eric Lander, a molecular biologist and a leader of the Human Genome Project, urged more scientists to open their minds to learning from Buddhist meditation and related practices. He called on scientists to understand that the pathway of science is only one way to understanding. 'Science is a very powerful and effective paradigm,' he said, 'and yet we know it does not contain all the answers to all human needs. Like any one-dimensional diet, consuming only science leads to malnutrition.' " (Wired News via (Vedana)
The Proof is in the Pudding
From the Toronto Star:
...But they won't be. The responce from everyone (including president Bush) has been "we don't know why the public thinks that". And therein lies the truth. It's not that the speech writers and the speech givers aren't good at their jobs. They're brilliant people. The old cream of the crop. It's that they've done exactly what they were supposed to do.
We've been hoodwinked, by the best hoodwinkers money can buy.
Our fundamental belifes have been manipulated as a means to a very unclear end.
"U.S. President George W. Bush conceded for the first time yesterday that the United States had no evidence indicating Saddam Hussein had anything to do with the Sept. 11 terror attacks. On top of the non-existant chemical weapons, Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11.
Bush made the comment in a brief encounter with reporters at the White House, an apparent bid to answer critics who have accused him of linking the Iraq war and the terrorist attacks to justify an ongoing occupation, which is responsible for mounting American deaths and draining an economy already mired in deficit."
But when she was asked about the poll numbers showing seven in 10 Americans made the connection between Saddam and the terrorist attacks, Rice [Connie] said: "We have never claimed that Saddam Hussein had either direction or control of 9/11."...All the while the public at large thought so. The government is our source of information on it's activities. If you're working for the government, you are by nature working for the people. If seven out of ten of those people missunderstand what it is your doing, you aren't doing your job properly. When lives are at stake, incompetence is not acceptable. The numerous people responsible for the public face of this administration should be fired emediately.

Buck 65 has a new album coming out (already out if you live in the fine country of Canada). The first single, Wicked and Weird, has one of the best videos I've seen in some time. I don't see many videos these days. But still.... it has a breakdancing marionette. In addition to the video, the new buck65.com has a nice list of various videos and live performances available around the web... Some of the better ones include:
Anyways / Town Crier / Food Song / Stella
...Just because Buck has a fancy new slick video with trailer park hotties, doesn't mean you should expect the world from these links. They're pretty LoFi... just a man and a microphone (and sometimes a turntable). That's why I like them so much. Enjoy.
Announcement. Listen Up!
I have the sweetest girl in the whole wide world.
(no offence to any girls reading this blog who thought they were the sweetest. i'm sure you're pretty sweet too... but this is America. there has to be a number 1 -- and it is Lane. sorry. keep up the good work though. it's better to have been close, than to never have curtsied at all.)

I had a birthday... Yesterday. Wild celebrating in the street was cut short by a nagging cold and the fact that I'm really not much for birthdays. Lane was somewhat taken aback by that statement. It's always seemed like a somewhat arbitrary something to me. I was born today -- Yehaaa! Lets celebrate! ....celabrate what? Life ...Mine in paticular? Fair enough. I'm here. That's pretty neat, if I do say so myself. I'm here every other day too ...For now at least. I may not be here on my next birthday. In which case a lot of time to celebrate will have been wasted. Not that we should have a party with gifts everyday. After all, it's the thought that counts.... And thinking that thought takes only a little time out of every day.
None the less, I do appreciate the wonderful gifts, the yummy breakfast with my lady, and the delicious full of friends dinner at Mifune. Thank you all very very much.

Real Live Preacher
By the time I was out of school and ready to be an employed minister, I was having some serious problems with the church. That's not good. My options were pretty much "minister" or "you want fries with that?"One mans struggle with spirituality, blogged.
